School Project for Ministry of Education, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Ministry of Education selected us to design the interior of 200 new schools under construction in Riyadh City and its immediate region. The Ministry dissatisfied with the interior design concept by the project architect asked us to develop a new concept that is sensitive to the needs of today’s generation of Saudi children. The task had to be conducted expeditiously and within both the architectural framework already under construction and the established project budget set by the ministry. Also for serviceability reasons and to minimize construction delays it was important to work with local suppliers and in materials commonly available. Our task was to envision and design a young, fresh and forward looing educational environment that would encourage learning while respecting the highest international standards. Constrained by the existing architectural framework, our design intervention was limited to the use of colors, lighting and acoustics.  Adapted to new standards, these design components are potent and effective means for improving and enhancing children’s educational experience. Recognized as such, our interior school design has been hailed as a new model for Saudi Arabia’s lower education system.
